Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the latest installment of financial benefit to the farmers under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme. The amount exceeds Rs 18,000 crore and it will be delivered to over 90 million beneficiaries via direct benefit transfer.
Modi released the instalment of Rs 2,000 to every farmer on the birth anniversary of former prime minister and BJP stalwart Atal Bihari Vajpayee, which is every year celebrated as “Good Governance Day” by the ruling party.
Under the PM-KISAN scheme, a financial benefit of Rs 6,000 per year is provided to small and marginal farmers, payable in three equal instalments of Rs 2,000 each. The fund is transferred directly to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries.
The programme comes amid protests by various farmer unions against three farm laws recently enacted by the Modi government.
Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said the government was confident that the entire amount would reach the farmers’ accounts directly and it would greatly benefit the farmers. He further added, “I appeal to the protesting farmers to end their protest and hold talks with the government. I hope they will understand the importance of the new farm laws, and the issue will be resolved soon.”

PM Narendra Modi, while addressing the people, said, “Happiness in the lives of farmers adds happiness to all the people. I wish everyone a very happy Christmas. Today is Geeta Jayanti. Today we also mark Madan Mohan Malviya’s birth anniversary, and also the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Hence, on this day we celebrate Good Governance Day.”
“Atal ji was the flagbearer of good governance. He laid the foundation stone for so many welfare schemes for farmers and for development. Therefore, the entire nation pays tribute to him.”
He added, “Ataj ji spoke against all sorts of corruption related to welfare schemes for farmers. Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme lives up to his expectations of Good Governance. This is good governance. No commission, no cut, no leakage, direct fund transfer to the farmers.”
He said that every state and union territory is availing of this scheme except West Bengal. “The government of West Bengal is not giving the benefit to the 7 million farmers of Bengal and this pains me”, he added.
“If Mamata Banerjee was such a wellwisher of farmers, then why has she not given the benefits of PM Kisan Nidhi Scheme?, PM Modi said. He said that Mamata is supporting the farmers’ protest in Punjab but not doing anything for her own farmers.
Those who do not raise their voices for the farmers in Bengal are trying to break the nation in Delhi in the name of farmers.
He said that people of Opposition have the time to misguide farmers in Punjab but they have not tried to revolt in Kerala where APMC concept is missing.
